A moral dilemma (opinions welcome)

Post by sb1227 »

Ok, here's the deal. My percula clowns have spawned, we have the eggs in the 90 PVC elbow they host in. Keep in mind that I absolutely adore these fish and they do tend to stress when I mess with their house! I know the fry wouldn't have a chance in the big tank, but I don't want to freak out the clowns.
I would love to put the piece of pvc in a 10 Gal sort of refugium I have running in another room, just to see if the eggs hatch( and put a new elbow in the reef tank, like they wouldn't notice :D ). The tank has no fish but a couple of small hermits and tons of bristleworms and critters in it. I am a little concerned that the bristleworms might eat the eggs?
So the dilemma: stress the clowns and possibly save the babies? Or take out the eggs and risk them getting eaten in the 10 gal.
I don't think I have a whole lot of time, so suggestions would be helpful. Thanks, Sue

I would not get too excited...once the clowns start to breed they will breed about every couple of weeks....They supply good food for the rest of the tank...

I was actually looking into this today cause I was thinking about dedicating a 30-40g to some clowns and possibly raising/trading them.

I have never heard of much success with getting the spawn to live but it could not hurt to try. It is very exciting though to have spawning in your tank if it is inverts, fish, corals....very exciting stuff.

I think that actually raising the clowns from the larval stage would be pretty hard unless you have a rotifer culture or some other way to supply them with food. It is not impossible though. I suggest that you check out the Fish Breeding forum on Reef Central.
Wanted: to set up a tank again.
