Question for Refrigeration A/C gurus

Post by Brandon »

Is it ok to oversize the evaporator coil? What happens if this is oversized?
The evaporator coil in this instance is for a chiller, so humidity wouldn't be a factor.. Will it shorten the life of the compressor?

This is what I am thinking of:
These units state 2 horsepower - 24,000 btu, That is way more than I need and don't want to run a 220 compressor, would like something in the 8000btu range to match it with.

Will this work?

Are you wanting to run that 24,000btu heat exchanger with an 8,000btu compressor and condensor coil?

I don't think it will work well. You can use an oversized (maybe 20% larger) evap with not much problem. But with one 3x the size I don't think you will get much cooling from the coil, the compressor may just not have enough ass for the coil.

I would be scared of it flooding liquid refrigerant back on the compressor and destroying it. That is a lot of difference in capacity.

Thanks guys, I was afraid that might be the case.. I can get a smaller exchanger from S&W Wilson Ent., but it's higher.. 1/3hp is $250, 1/2hp is $285. Gonna have to poke around some more to find a cheaper alternative.
