Macro Algae

Post by andy4499 »

I seen a thread on this subject before but I could not find it so her is another question about macro algae. I have a refugium that has a clump of macro algae in it, but it does not grow that fast. In fact I think that it dies of more then it grows. What would cause this? Here are some specs on the refug.

20 gallon tank
4” or so sand bed
2 - 2’ long plant/aquarium bulbs (20watts each)

I've got my light running about 14 hours a day. How long have you had your tank set up. I don't think you have strong enough lights. I think Macro requires more light that regular plants. I'm running 2 55 watt pc on my sump. Some of the members are buying some kind of shop light from Home depot that puts out a lot of watts. Ask Josh what kind of light he has. I think he is running one.

It's basically a flood light made by LOA you get from Home Depot. Here is a thread with a picture of one, they run about $30

Yeah, what Kevin said! I run these on my tank at work (as shown in the thread) and I also run two of 'em over a 55G for a refuge. I run the refuge 24/7, the lights always stay on. The floodlights will set you back $35 each at Home Depot, and HD does carry replacement bulbgs, which you'll have to replace yearly, those are $12. Great light for the price! As others have said, those NO flourescents just aren't gonna cut it, you need more light.

Would 1 or 2 of these lights work or would it not be enough light for it.

do NOT use Halogen lights!! too much heat, and the color spectrum is wrong.

You can get a workhorse 5 ballast that is able to run 2 55watt pc light cheap. That is what I run in my tanks. I have even found them on ebay that are all ready set up with end caps and reflector really cheap. Here is a link to a ballast. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... eName=WDVW I usually can find the bulbs for around $14 DOLLARS A piece on ebay.

I think you would be wasting your time with Halogen lights. And they all so would produce a lot of heat.

Oh well it looks like I will be going to Home depot and getting the lights that I need. Power compacts is just out of my budget at this time.

I have had the tank for about 2 years. my macro has not grown much but has died a lot. I have replace it about 3 times since I have had the tank set up.

I use one of these:

I would use two if I had a larger refuge.
Wanted: to set up a tank again.
