www.marinedepot.com has a 4" fan with a thermal sensor for $42.95
the 3" is $38.95. Although what I would do is locate an old used AT powersupply...usually someone has an old pc in a closet...anything older than a Pentium I 200mhz is usually an AT powersupply. Connect the white and blue wires together and the brown and black together.. then buy one of those computer fan controller kits from ebay which has a digital thermometer with 4 zones and will control the speed of each 4 zones.

AT powersupply... Free-$15
Digital Fan Controller... $15-25
4 120mm PC fans(two for hood-two for sump)... $8-20
Extended wiring...~$10

Between $33-70 give or take a few dollars you can have totally automated cooling...that would only cool when it needed and when its mildly warm..you wint have two fans buzzing at full speed.

Use a 12volt ac 110 converter like you use on a cell phone wall carger. You can pick them up at the good will for next to nothing. You can can run a few computer fans on one of those.

Josh do the fans that you have need to be wired? How much are they, what will I need to get them running if they need to be wired? Also I have some 80mm and 120mm computer fans, would they work? If so how do you go about wiring them.

Got your PM... the fans I have are standard 80mm fans, they're three wire Antec fans that I got from Kevin. They'll need to be spliced and wired to a 12v AC adapter. If you want a few, let me know, and I'll get 'em to you.

All I use is a 4" computer fan....from an old power supply....120v. can get from any electronic store or computer store......run on same timer as the lights....all you are trying to do is remove the heat....not blow the water out of the tank.....just takes a little air moving around..not much.

Terry, How do you connect the fans to a power supply, because it has a special end on them for a computer? I tried splicing the ends of the fan to a plug in and it burnt the fan up. It was a good thing that I did not pay for it. I have two more 4” fans and one more 2” fan. Before I attempt it again I think will get some impute from you first. Any advice anyone can give would be great. Thanks

Andy make sure the fans are rated for AC voltage, many appliance fans are DC. You can find tranformers to convert voltage if you know what the fan calls for. Radioshack sells 4" 120v AC fans for about $25, all you need to do is splice in a cord. I bought a pair mounted to an aluminum bracket and wired on reefcentrals classifieds for $35, you may want to check there or ebay.

If you are using a 12v DC fan either use a power pack, like maybe a spare cell phone power pack. Just make sure it says 12v DC on the pack. If you use a computer power supply you would use the red and black wires that go to a hard drive or floppy drive. The yellow wire is 5 volts, cut those and do not use them. And like Terry said if you use a 120volt fan just use a computer power cable or an old extension cord.

I think that I will go today and buy a fan what would be the best place at good price to buy one. I think that I saw Radio Shack for $25, Hoopers, and reefcentral for $35 (I looked on reefcentral and could not find anything). Are these all of the best places to go?
