Storm season is here..

Post by tbmoore »

Just a reminder that storm season is here....my tank will start to go south after only 4hrs......(high fish load). what is your limit....do you have a generator....xtra water ready....a dollar or min spent now might save lots of money and death......(if you have a generator....when was the last time you ran it)....do you have gas.....or plan for it....Lets save our reefs as we go into storm season....

what could keep the tank from going under so quickly...what things should be connected to a backup power supply? With a small tank would I just need a low powered maxi-jet or something? And how long would that last on a basic UPS backup?

depends on the load of the tank....fish place a load on a tank and I have a lot of fish....corals and live rock help a tank....also heat of outside sources will make a difference....with my fish load after 4hrs I need some help....at least to keep the water moving for oxy....

A car battery and a 12 volt bilge pump would be handy to have around and also and aerator like you use to keep bait fish Alive would probably work fine too and they run off batteries.

I would just buy a generator if i saw a need. I have too much money in these tanks not to protect them from a major power outage.

My point is if you need a generator...so does everyone else.....get ready before the rush...if you have one...ck it out now...if the carb is messed up will be too late to get it fixed......

Yeah but it has been a looonnnnggg since we had a threat long enough to cause me to get one. In fact the power company has advanced enough to have the power up pretty soon after a major storm.

I also do not know the area where you live. Here the closer you live to Cottage hill or the Airport the quicker you get your power back on. Alot of people that live in the close to the airport only had there power down for hours, others had days to wait. I still will take no chances, if a major storm does come i will take any necessary steps to protect my tank.

Just got an estimate on one of those automatic doo-hickeys that powers a certain circuit segment automatically if power is lost.

The estimate was not pretty! Too many god damn numbers
The reason was because I am not home that often. This sucks.. I guess I will have to bite the bullet, for my animals!

I'm glad you guys started this thread. I'm going to go the "poor man's route".

I found these battery powed aerators for $8.76. I'm getting 2 (1 for reef and 1 for fish only) http://www.petdiscounters.com/aquarium/ ... _pump.html.

I'm getting one of these "automatic" ones too for the reef $11.99 http://www.petdiscounters.com/aquarium/ ... ttery.html The automatice one was recommended by Richard Durso on http://www.advancedaquarist.com (http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/ ... eature.htm)
