how NOT to clear up the residue from direct kalk dosing

Post by ShagMan »

I was changing out filter bags and noticed that I had a nice buildup on the bottom of the sump, of the residue left over from kalk, which I had been direct dosing. Well, I figured, heck, I'd just blast it up while I have the return piping in my hand.... BAD IDEA!

Amazingly, everything survived, the PH didn't even move, I found out later that most of the residue was probably just calcium carbonate, which is what the sand/rock is made up of anyway. My only casualty was my sailfin :( who decided, in the blindness of the white stuff, that he'd make a bed on top of the carpet... needless to say, his dead carcass was still half out of the carpet's mouth this afternoon. See the carpet on lower right bulged up? uh-huh, he was full.
