Is lace rock white? so I know what I'm looking for.
Lace rock generally is from brown to greyish-black

Hey guys help me out. Is lace rock made of calcium carbonate? If not, do we know for certain that it is reef safe (i.e. trace metals)?

You can also use limestone.
http://www.Garf.org sells a product that you can put over base rock and it will seed it with all of the coraline spores that you need to make it become live.
The product is called Grunge.
Recipe for live rock
*Build reef in your tank from calcium based rock.
*fill tank with water, no fish, inverts or sand yet
*start lighting
*sprinkle rock with Grunge or with coraline scraped from live rock
*dose tank with heavy Kalwasser. 6 tblspn of pickling lime per gallon of
water add as top off, use a lot.
*also use argomilk 1 spoon a day.
* use a reef plus type additive every day
The idea is to keep calc levels very high. Too high for fish or inverts.
In 3-6 weeks you will see very strong coraline growth.
Do a 95 % water change before you add sand . then start with critters and fish.
This rock was limestone cultured by the above method. you can see the dense coraline between the corals.
