Although they are out, I think it is Lowes that sells a Troybilt 3500 watt generator for $500, this is what i am buying with part of my tax money. I may also look into a small portable air conditioner later. For now the generator will do.

We went with the Craftsman 5600, which is the same thing as the troy-bilt 5550 that Home Depot offers. Bought from Sears for $649.

I would go as high as I could (within reason). That way you could still run your microwave, wash clothes, etc...
I'm going to wire our main box with a transfer panel so that I can plug it in and power the house lights as well. It's real nice to have lights in the bathroom, etc.
I'm pleased with the one we got, it starts with 1/2 pull every time and ran all day on 5 gallons of gasoline.. which is good because it was tough to get at the time.
Don't forget to pick up some extra gas cans to have around also. I didn't have but 1 at the time, and would fill up the vehicle and siphon from it when I needed gas, because there were no gas cans to be found around here. Home Depot has a 4 pack of 5-gallon cans now.

Home depot above should say Lowes.
Also might want to check out the Generac Wheelhouse 5550 which is the same thing again with a different frame, big wheels in the back and a handle. I would have gotten that one if I could have found one, but Home Depot had already sold the 3 truck loads of generators they were getting in.

Jason & Ryan used one of these.
I bet you'd be able to find something really cheap in about a month in the paper when people start selling all of these that they bought.

In the paper right now there must be 20. It seems like they are selling for about retail though so I would wait a while. My uncle has a Honda because they are really quiet and are computer friendly. I don't know that much about generators but what could Honda do differently to make them computer friendly?
Wanted: to set up a tank again.

Not real sure but it has to do with the voltage output is very consistent with the Honda. We have one on our race trailer and it can sit for months and then always starts on the first pull. When we bought it they told us if you have to pull it more than twice, take it to the repair shop because it is not going to crank. And in 5 plus years we have never pulled it twice to start it. Honda's are pricey but well worth it.
