halides

I'm thinking about getting some 175watt halides but I don't have much room in my canopy. What is the minimum distance that they should be above the water.

You can get by with 5-6 inches. It really depends, if water can splash on them they can break.
Wanted: to set up a tank again.

My Vhos are about 8-10 inches above the water and they do have some dried salt on them. I was also thinking about putting just one above the glass divider in the middle of my tank so that it wouldn't get splashed and I still would get the water flicker but I was wondering if it would make the divider heat up only bing 3-4 inches away from the light. I really just want some flicker.

The center brace would heat up. I have heard some horror stories about center braces and MH being to close to them. Just a thought
