Power filters

Post by Reef Farmer »

Hey ya'll

I have a 55 gal. FOWLR (27# live rock so far) with Aqua C Remora skimmer and am currently using (2) power filters a 400 Emperior and 330 Penquin in hopes of increasing water flow since I do not have any power heads. Should I use both of them ? any advantage or disadvantage? Do I even need power heads yet?

:?: :?: :?:

Thanks for all the advice on the sand I'm going to buy aragonite today.

The power filters really do nothing for circulation.

If you really are doing FOWLR, you really only need minimal flow just to turn the water over and any desired flow by the fish. One Maxi Jet 1200 would be more than enough.

The power filters are nitrate factories, so you are defeating the purpose of your skimmer to some extent. I would get rid of them. Eventually, your rock will provide treatment for organics not removed by your skimmer.

Will it be ok to remove both of them, I only have 27# of live rock? without adding the power head right now?

Rene,

I'm very new at this also but the best I can tell, the filters you described are your only source of water circulation. You would have to have the power head before removing the filter pumps. Good thing is you can pick up a nice powerhead for less than you paid for the emperor 400.
