Hair Algea

Post by snoopdog »

I am having to take further steps to kill this stuff. I am turning off my halides this week and cutting my VHO down to 6 hours a day. I figure the nocturnal crabs like the emerald would be out more. By no means it this stuff taking over but it does have a foot hold on my rock. When we go to P Cola tomorrow i am getting these things if i can find them.

1) More scarlets
2) two mexican turbo grazers....they will go in the sump later.
3) two queen conchs.
4) Lettuce Nudibranch (10 percent chance to find one)
5) Bi-color blenny (several post said they eat this stuff)
6) More Astrea (there again post say they do eat this stuff)

My nitrates are down to 4-5 ppm from 100ppm so the water changes helped on that account. The skimmer is tweaked to perfection and skimming better than ever. I have 24 hours of light over the sump with various algea. The RO/DI is hooked up so even better water than before. I will let everyone know what happens. Lawnmower Blenny is currently shy of algea.

I'd take a few more emerald crabs at $5 a piece and some lettuce nudis if you find them!

Rich may have emeralds that cheap but no where else i have seen. Josh some urchins from B&B may clear that up, they had them for $5. Just beware that they are not partial and will clear the entire rock, coralline too. When you do get some cleaners cut your light hours down to bare minimum, alot of things like emerald crabs like the darkness. When i check on my tank late at night i see 10-20 emeralds on the top of the rock cleaning. You never see them during the day. Also the reduced light will stunt the algea growth to some degree.

I would go with the letucce nudis, the mexican turbos, the emerald crabs and a foxface if you have the room. The foxface will put a bigger dent than ANYTHING anyone has mentioned. I had one before and he did an awesome job.....will be getting another one soon....hopefully!
