Team MBRK - Let's Fold some Proteins !

I started a Team MBRK on Grid Computing if anyone is interested. I joined a long time ago but have not run the project for a long time. I think it would be fun to see what we could do in numbers for us pumping out work units. It also goes to a very good cause. I reinstalled on my machines at home and have 5 running now with 6 by this weekend.

The laptops will not be putting out much because I have the CPU cycles turned way down to 600mhz to keep the heat down, but still with 3 of those going they should still crunch units.

It can be run as a screen saver that does not take up any CPU cycles until it cuts on. So how about some competition guys, this could be fun.

If they have any hint of intelligence, they will create a UNIX, Linux, Mac OS X distro, even if it has a CLI and no GUI. I have a couple of macs with over 2ghz of extra computing power sitting around this house 24 hours a day (unless I need to do some graphics work). They are missing out on a huge number of geeks who have *NIX boxes (be it Linux or BSD or OS X) laying around. Someone need to make a distro now..and I will be the first to install and donate some cycles.

little off here but i have to ask daniel do you have much info in linux id like to do a file server of some sort but dont know where to begin!!

in the topic i have an old machine i may have to set up i have lost a few family members to cancer and its a bad thing but i do smoke

this is like the seti project is it still going

If you have no linux experience, you should try SuSE or Ubuntu. If you think that you may really get into it..get Redhat (aka Fedora Core) or Debian You can join one of many forums and user groups. All of these should have decent server abilities built in. I have used all of these. Ubuntu is probably the best bet for a desktop linux. SuSE and Redhat are pretty well put together. And Debian is highly modular, you can select certain features from a list to download instead of the entire package. I would not recommend Debian for a linux newbie though. I don't currently have a linux system up since I don't have a working x86 machine at the moment, but whenever I find a good deal on a replacement Motherboard, I may set it up again.

Ubuntu is very painless, easily installs(in most cases). I also loved the Fedora Core (2 or 3)

SETI will probably be going forever, but nothing has really been found yet, at all. SETI is the longest DC project if I remember right.

I guess I should had asked about what we should start up. I also have started a team at Stanford on the Protein Folding Project. Our team number is 46002.

If you guys would rather do this project it is the same to me. Just let me know which you prefer, the Folding project has .nix options that do work.

The Folding Project targets many diseases including cancer.

SETI probably has the most data to crunch as well, But it seems pretty pointless to me. If we DO find a signal, it will most likely be 100s or 1000s of years old by the time it gets here. I had my machines running Folding @ Home for a while but I stopped for some reason or another. I would LOVE to help with this cancer research because my mother is currently being treated for cancer
