R/O Help

I'm trying to break in my first R/O filter (Forgive my ignorance). I don't know how much to adjust the flow on the waste water output. The only guide I could find said it should be about 4 times the output of the filtered water. Is that right?
What would happen if it was more or less than that?

I thought the RO units automatically adjusted the flow with a flow orifice? Mine does.

There should be a flow restrictor that is a fixed orifice in the waste line. There is no real adjustments. Just make sure that you discard the first 5 gallons. Next you will be getting the double DI add on like I did. The 4:1 ratio that the manufacturer gave you is just an estimat eo fhow much water you will waste. For evey gallon of good water you waste 4 gallons of waste water. The waste water is good though. You can use it for other things. It's probably a pretty good usit if the waste is 4:1 the best I have seen was something like 2.x:1, the worst was like 10:1.

You might be right.
I don't even know what a flow orifice is...

How would I go about knowing if that is the case w/mine?

If there is not a restrictor the unit will not make water (i.e. all water will be waste). Is that a HB water filter?

So basically I leave the valve on the waste water output wide open, right?

I can't tell you what kind it is. I was given to me by a friend and the only writing is on the membranes which say "Applied Membranes, Inc"

I don't know why there would be a valve on the drain side. Is the pic in your first thread the one that you have?

Yes, but that is the one they had on the site.
The only difference is that the brass fitting in the picture is a valve.

Yeah, leave the valve open... the valve is to flush out the restrictor, mine has the same thing. In fact, my unit looks exactly that, except that I have a larger (32oz?) inline DI unit with a clear main body that's refillable (came with four DI refills).

The restrictor should be a long strawlike object inserted into the yellow waste line, it is in there I hope.
