Water changes: how much and how often?

Post by Scott »

I have been doing monthly water changes since I set up my new tank. I udually do 15 gallons once a month. Recently I have seen more and more reefers doing water changes either every two weeks or every week. How often do you do a water change and how much do you change at one time?
Wanted: to set up a tank again.

I've been doing water changes about every two week. 22 gal for a 92 gal tank. I have been trying to get rid of some red slime algae.

I'm gonna get rebuffed for this, but, going on one year, and no "willing" water changes. I have done a few 10% "forced" water changes, that's the kind where you have to use a wet/dry vacumn to get it off the kitchen floor

The going rate is if everything is ok to do a 10% water change once a month....I try to stay personaly between one month and 6wks. Because of wk I sometimes get behind and run a little late. Keeping a tank healthy is much cheaper and easier than trying to bring one back...by the time you notice problems sometimes it is too late...you know the old story of something was already dead when you bought it but did not show it yet...same thing can happen in your tank...

Seriously though... after changing my water this weekend for the first time in over 6 months I have noticed that my LTA is extended like never before!!!!!

If I get the time, I like to do 20gal a week. It seems to slip alot and I find myself doing about 20gal every other month. I really do not notice any difference 1 way or another. I just do not like worrying about magnesium, iodine, etc.
