MP3 ideas/questions.

Post by Scott »

My wife is looking at getting an MP3 player or an iPod. Since I am electronically challenged I wondered if anyone knows much about these. One big question that I have is do they make something so that the player can be used with a car stereo? Does anyone have any suggestions before I buy her one?

the iPod is probably the best portable music player ever!
It is also the best bet for an MP3 player that also works with your car stereo.Companies like Alpine, Kenwood, Pioneer and a few others make interfaces that allow you to control the ipod from the CD player while the iPod is plugged in. BMWs also have this feature all all of there new cars.

My wife loves her iPod, I'm getting one soon, I have about 15-20 friends who all have iPods. I dont know anyone who has an MP3 player, that is not an iPod, who actually uses it. The ipod mini is good for about 1000 songs(4gig)or 1500(6gig). These are probably better for people without the need to carry a HUGE library of songs everywhere 24/7. It is very small and lightweight. I can bring it to the meeting saturday if you would like and you can try it out. The regular iPod is really nice for anyone who has A LOT of music they like to carry with them. The iPod also has more add-ons than ANY other portable music player. You can find iPod car kits that use FM or cassette adapters and plug into a cigarette lighter. There are hundreds of different cases made for them and lots of cool accessories. The iPod is the ONLY "MP3" player i would recommend period.

Thanks, I've checked up on it some and found that there is an iLink (I think that is the name) that can use an FM station, like the old six disk changers that went in the trunk, instead of the cassette adapter. Do you know of anyone using that?

Hey Scott, Snakeman uses one of those, the fm modulator thingy. I "think" they have them at the liquidation outlet which is right at the 31 i-10 intersection.

I love my Ipod, It make riding around in the wood on my Bulldozer a lot funner. I use a belkin tune cast and also a tape deck thing. I was told that the I-link works well. I think they got them at bestbuy. You can usually pick up a tunecast at liquidation store and hudsons. If you get a fm transmiter make sure it is a digital type. You will get a better radio lock. I've got over 2000 songs on my and have only used about 5 gigs. The only down side to the Ipod is that the batteries only last a couple years. I have found that you can order battery replacement kit real cheap so you don't have to send it back to to Ipod and pay alot to get them replaced.

Speaking as a person who bought one early and has already lost a battery, I will not buy another I-Pod until they fix the problem. I got less than two years of life and I babied the battery. The fact that they do not have a simple replacable battery is inexcuseable given the price.

I have not yet found a suitable replacement product, however.

iPod is most popular for sure... they have the FM transmitters that go with them, at BestBuy for sure.

Deanna and I have cameraphones that have flash memory to put mp3's on... 256mb right now, good for 4-5 albums.

How do you get the songs to the MP3 player? Can you convert CD's that you already have to MP3 format and transfer them or do you have to download them?

I appreciate the input.

Either way... there are great free utilities for making mp3's from cd's that you already have, or you can download them in a number of ways... I usually convert over CD's that I already have... they're transferred with a cable, or by taking the memory out of the unit and loading the memory seperately... you'd probably be doing it via cable.

Ipod comes with a program that will convert them for you, very easy and fast.

Where is the best place to download songs? I don't mind a monthly fee but just not 99 cents a song.
