Mobile Bay Reef Keepers

What would be a good, but cheep filter for a 10 or 20 gal tank. I may set up a small tank for soft corals (shroons and zoo’s, ect.). Or does any one have an extra one someone wants to get rid of. I will also be looking for a tank if any one knows of a good place to get one (20 gal long). Do they make a small tank that is deeper then 12”?

If you want a small tank deeper than 12 inches, you might have to custom order it, which means more money.

That is what I though. I think that I will stick with a 10 gal or a 20 gal long.

You can build this for less than $60 (2/3 of that is the light).... all you need to do for filtration is a powerhead or two and water changes... you don't need a "filter" for something that small. I actually used a large HOB filter that I got from Walmart a long time ago, with no filter media in it, and a standard HOB heater.

Could the light that Scott posted work just the same to cut down on the cost.

Probably not... I only say this because it's a 19w fixture, the LOA's are 65w, and as a bonus are rectangular so they cover a standard 10G better. Also don't forget a downward facing bulb/floodlamp needs lots of vertical room in a canopy, build that into your design if you do use them.

Are you sure the white LOA fixtures are up to $40? I just bought one last week for $35.

IMO... I"d go with the bigger 20g, then buy a 10g ($15) for a refuge. For the refuge buy a small return pump ($15) and a LOA 65W lamp ($35). With the refuge you have ALL the filtration you need and no nitrates. All for about $65. I wouldn't even put much if any sand in there unless you have left over from the tank. Like I said... IMO.

How often do you do water changes to it? And yes it is 39.97 now I just went back up and bought one. I may take it back if I find one later though for cheeper. Josh PM me your number so I can call you some time when I start to set up my nano, I can ask you some questions about it.

I'm talking about a refuge as a filter. It's the best thing I know. You don't even need the protein skimmer or any filter then.

Oh I see with all the other post, i forgot my own question. I think that may be a little to much for me right now. I was thinking of a HOB filter of some sort.

No problem... I'm a little slow when answering most post anyhow!
