Correct it is either an optical illusion to misjudge size or they are super imposed. Those are actually a true spider native to Iraq but I think they max out under 6 inches or so.

At first they looked huge but after looking I think the spiders are just a lot closer to the camera and the guys leg in the background makes them look bigger. Look at the palm in the upper right hand corner of the picture. They are still quite large though.

Anything more than four legs starts the Hebie Jeebie factor. Add size to that and ...... ~ shudder ~ Rather wrestle a grizzly!

It is really all fake, there has been a mass of emails going around about "camel spiders with fake claims of making funny noises, running 50 miles and hour and unreal sizes. I just figured that you might get a kick out of the picture. If you do a Lycos top 50 search you will see the hoax.

When I was in Iraq last year we slept in an old abandoned Iraqi agricultural school and those camel spiders crawled on us at night all the time, believe it or not, but never bit us. They are called Camel spiders because what they do is crawl up a camels leg and onto his stomach and inject a painless venom into the camel that eats away at the camels skin until his guts fall out, then the spider eats the dead camel's guts. But we never saw any camel spiders as big as in the above picture. The ones we saw only were about 4 inches long or so. We used to kill em and hang em in our Major's doorway on a string and scare the $h!t out of him.

No way! It was way to hot to wear a flak jacket at night to sleep in. I don't know why, but they never bit us. They just crawled on us at night and some guys (that hated spiders) would wake up freakin out and wake everyone up. We'd laugh our asses off, til u know, it happened to us the next night. After a few weeks, we kinda got used to em.
