well, i have 4 400 watt hallides, the mag 36, a hammerhead, and the atinics are 80 watts each as well, so with almost 2000 watts of light and 2 large pumps, the water got hot fast. The lights are about a foot off the top of the water, probably closer to 18 inches. Open back canopy design. I havent finished the canopy yet, it will have 4 fans, two on each side blowing across, and a top fan to vent out the rising heat into the attic. But needless to say, yeah the hallides will heat up the water pretty good....
