I have caught pepermint shrimp, blennies, and rock anemones in less than 2 feet of water at fort pickens. To get the tube anemones, and the better fish you will have to have dive gear. Fort picken drops off to about 60 feet deep in less than 100 feet off the shore. I usually find the cool stuff at about 30 feet. At night you can just use a net because most fish will be sleeping. As far as making a slurp gun out of PVC I wouldn't wast my time and money with that. It's hard enought to caught them wit a real slurp gun. The problem with PVC is that it's not clear so the fish will run from it because they can see it. That is also why a net isn't very good in the daytime. I use a big clear plastic container, like you would use to store dry noddles and stuff in, to catch most of the fish I get. You can buy them at walmart for a few dallars. I've got a slurp gun and unless you have dive tanks so that you can really take your time stalking the fish it's pretty hard to catch them. You almost have to get the fish in the barrle before you can suck them in. Before I would spend money and time trying to build one I would go down to the dive shop and buy one for $40 dollars. By the way i'm pretty sure Fort pickens is closed at night so you might want to call first. Alabama point would be a better chose for trying to catch stuff snorkling just make sure you wear dive boots and gloves.

good luck

I wouldn't think you would catch anything in a coke bottle tarp. And you have to consider how the tide would affect a coke bottle trap. They are just to light weight. You would have better luck with a large minnow trap.

Jason, are we still on for tomorrow night?

I don't need any snorkling gear or anything, just some swim trunks, sandals and an ice chest (to carry home) & some containers to put stuff in, right?

Don't forget a light or head lamp. I'm going to bring some snorkling gear but if you don't have a dive light snorkling gear want do you much good.

Yeah, I don't have any gear yet (coming soon though, just want to save and get good stuff, like split fins)....

Is there a semi-reasonable "not a dive light" that would be OK rated for a few feet? If not, I'll just go buy a head lamp, to make sure I don't ruin a flashlight :) I have a mag-light, but I don't think they're anything more than "moisture resistant".

I don't really know of any either. I'm sure they sell them.

If anyone catches one of those awesome looking tube anemones like Snakeman did, I sure would like to have one. Maybe we have something we could trade for it.

The tides would just play havoc on a coke bottle even if you had weighs on it. And the other problem you will have is the from crabs being attracted to it. It would have to dead calm. One of those minnow traps that they sell at fish shops would probably work okay.

The problem isn't catching one, the problem is trying to dig one up. They will burrow a foot or so deep in the sand. Try digging a hole in the sand with your hand the next time you are in the water, it's pretty hard and time consumming. If somebody will take me out in a boat i'll catch you what ever you want. I've got some underwater digging tools now so I should have a better success rate at trying to get them up.

I'll hook you up. Our nieghbor has a small boat, and a friend of ours has one. How far out do you have to get.

A few miles, How big is the boat. I don't want to go out on one that isn't going to be safe. It needs to be big enough to handle 2-3 foot seas. I really want to go out to the oil rigs so I can get some blennies. They are out from fort morgan.
