I would never buy another Tetra product after watching that video.

We're assuming this happens on a regular basis so do we know of several of these "events" happening? Are we jumping to conclusions? This conversation started because Rich said he got a call from that lady looking for Nemo to hand out at a party. Did he sell them to her? Does anyone know that B&B, the Waggy Tail, or any other fish store did?
Just because the LFS sells "Nemo" fish right after the movie comes out doesn't make them evil. I have had several fish stores "discourage" me from buying something that wasn't right for my tank or me… and yes, this included B&B.
Once again, we need to decouple the "Nemo" issue from the "I hate the LFS" issue. Bash them all you want, but do it accurately. Go back and re-read this post. How many times did we say “seems”, “wonder”, or “I’ll bet”. No one mentioned anything immoral they saw.
Here you go:
And anyways... they are fish and we kill them too. We are even guiltier because we know better. Do you think they (LFS) would sell me 3-dozen to make fish-on-a-stick out of them? I would hope so! For the record I'm a hunter and fisher. I like to catch, kill, and eat stuff, but I'd never kill anything for "fun". Yes, I'd put a sea anemone in my tank to live 5 years knowing that it would live 100+ in the wild (so do the rest of us monsters).

Now that’s a good statement! There is no assuming here and it comes directly from Terry’s experience. Good old fashion, healthy bashing!tbmoore wrote:Personal experience..is b&b fish are not that healthy....

A girl at Petsmart tried to sell me a toy for my parrot yesterday, It was around $20 or more. I said it would last 30 minutes. She said I could bring it back within 14 days if it broke..
Hah! She said that you need to teach your parrot not to bite the toys so hard, by pulling his beak away from the toy when he bites them really hard. Dur Dur Dur... Bzzzt, wrong answer. He crushes brazil nuts in less than 5 seconds, I am not grabbing his beak and pulling it away from a toy he's happily killing, that just stupid, that is what I bought the toy for in the 1st place.
Can I blame Pet Smart for this advice? Nah.. this is just a kid working after high school.
If people don't use common sense and believe anything the employees tell them, then they're idiots. I guess that is why we live in a world full of disclaimers.
Can't blame the pet stores, etc for selling merchandise, that is what they do.

Sorry KrazyPlace but tbmoore is right.
B&B sells unhealthy fish. I know for a fact they buy from the cheapest (worst) wholesalers, they do not quarantine, and they have horrible maintenance procedures performed by ill-trained kids.
Bill told me one time basically that he makes his money on the dry goods, not the livestock. The livestock is there to make people buy the dry goods.
You know something KrazyPlace, just because one mentions or discusses a truth about something that is unpleasant or negative does not mean they are bashing. It might just mean they are honestly discussing the obvious.
When a business values profit margin over quality of product, it is their choice. They have the right to run their business as they want. But the customer also has a right to see it for what it is and to call it what it is.

Old Salty, I don't mind the bashing of the LFS and I think it is healthy... I just want accuracy. When the group started bashing Rich there was an almost immediate shift in his business practices and prices. Now he's probably the preferred vender for the Mobile members (and Terry).old salty wrote:...You know something KrazyPlace, just because one mentions or discusses a truth about something that is unpleasant or negative does not mean they are bashing. Where is the truth in your implications that B&B is pushing Nemo on little kids in fishbowls? You were implying that B&B was doing something completely immoral, but you had no personal experience of the fact. What do you want B&B and others in the business of selling fish and pet supplies to do? Not sell to people who come into their store or maybe they need to get the customer to fill out a questionnaire first and test them on knowledge of fish or any animal the customer wants to buy. If they fail the test: no sale?
For the record I agree that B&B's water quality is bad and that you have to be selective when buying fish. This is true for nearly everyone including Rich, Waggy Tail, AquaWorks, etc. Josh lost several very nice tangs as a result of ick brought in from Rich's store. I almost lost my 5" hippo from ick that came in with a powder brown from AquaWorks.

I was looking at one of there Nemo setups when a saleperson tried to push it on me. I think it was a 5 gal set up. Don't get me wrong I still go in there and still buy a lot of stuff, fish, drygoods, and stuff for my dog and cat. I just wish that the employees were more educated in the products they sell. If someone comes in and ask if they can put that fish in this kind of set up the employee should tell the costomer the pros and cons. When I was starting out I had been told so much bull S**t by there employees on want I need and how to do things I don't even listen to them anymore. If I have a question I ask it here first. Everybody has there own opions on how a tank should be keep up and I like to get more that one persons opion to consider. At some Lfs the only way to do things is there way and that's it. Just like the last time I was at B&B I was told that my Ph of 8.0 killed my fish. He said that without asking asking if I was having problems with any other fish in my tank and He didn't even do any other test. He just said That is what kill the fish. I know that there are many ways to loss a fish and that just seemed like they wanted to put the blame on my tanks PH. I wasn't mad because that fish died and didn't have a problem bring it back but it did piss me off when that is what they blamed it on. That last time I was there A guy with me asked if they ever get flat worm in there tanks and the guy said no but we get a lot of Brissle worms in a way like it was a bad thing to have them. I wonder if he new what a flat worm was. I'll still go there and buy fish and other stuff so don't get my wrong I'm not trying to bash the place. I just wished they did things differently and trained there employees better. If I go to get my car fixed I want the mechanic to know everything he can possible know about fixing cars. Same goes with fish shops.
RENTON: I chose not to choose life. I chose something else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who needs reasons when you've got Heroin?
Basically education is the issue and isn't that why we got together as a group? Other than enjoying each others company we use each other for local lifeline's when the crap gets bad.
We personally have had the experience of being in-experienced-> each and everyone of us, and we have all been the victims of other in-experienced LFS/vendors giving us advice before at some point in time....
i.e. -> yes a skilter is a good protien skimmer.....yes you can put that beautiful mandarin in a non-established 20 gallon..... yes that is a coral safe angel fish....(and good lord how many others that have happened to me directly)
We have had bad experiences with both B&B's fish and corals but we have had bad experiences with both Rich's fish and corals also.... you basically have to watch what you buy make sure it has been there a while (sometimes a week isn't long enough) and hope and pray that you are not being misled by the seller.
Arguing here isn't going to the change the fact that these LFS/vendors are there for one reason people keep them in business because they love this hobby, one can only hope that the seller has a little bit of knowledge and will lead the buyer in the right direction or the buyer has a little bit of insight to research it before they buy it.

The problem here is I bet your mechanic makes more than minimum wage and I bet they have some kind of formal training prior to being hired, these LFS's don't/wont admit to having the resources to actually train their employees the way they need to be trained and the fact of the matter is they actually have to care.
Snakeman I don't know if you bought that fish your talking about from B&B but they have a tendency to try and blame "something" in your tank for the fishes death so they are not held responsible for replacing the fish- at least that is what I have heard. I don't know if they still do but they use to require you to bring in water to test when you brought back the dead fish.
