OK, I'm now a self proclaimed expert on granular activated carbon (GAC) ... so here is the deal:

I found the ultimate carbon! I found a supplier who supplies many of the aquarium resellers. The GAC is made from lignite coal which is the undisputable over-achiever of the GAC market. Read this test data: http://www.pets-warehouse.com/carbon.htm, you will see the GAC made from lignite coal is far superior to other GACs available. Pay attention to the first 2 graphs.

It has a low Iodine number of 500 which is a measurement of the microporosity. It is very difficult to find this low of a value. The following link suggest an Iodine number less than 600: http://www.hallman.org/filter/gac.html. Matrix Carbon by Seachem has a Iodine number >1000: http://www.seachem.com/products/product ... arbon.html.

They do not state the Molasses number, but claim it to be very high. I can supply a PDF data sheet for this material if anyone wants.

The GAC is sold in 40 pound bags for $2.88/lb + shipping (no tax). If we order a pallet of 30 bags (hello Josh!), then the price is $1.44/lb (half!). Why do I do this? I'm glad you asked! I do not turn a profit off of this in any way, shape, or form. I too like a good cheap source of maintenance supplies.

Since I don't currently actively use this, I'm gonna have to bow out for now... I just can't afford to make any purchases, Deanna and I are dead broke, due to a cruise coming up.
