First, it would be a good idea to stop using well water. While it may seem that it is not making a difference, it most likely is. Unless she has had a well water analysis that guarantees purity, then it would not be wise to use it. Also, if hydrogen sulfide is present in the water, it is not safe to drink it. However, there are many other compounds that are present (that are in "safe" levels for drinking, but not for fish, like certain amounts of pesticides, etc.) that may be having a bad effect. DOC, while not very good for corals in higher amounts (though they are more tolerant than one might think), have little or no real effect on fish, let alone enough of one to stress it and get ich. If there is enough liverock or other supplemental filtration, assuming a normal bioload, there should not be detectable levels of any of the more toxic nitrogenous compounds. Has she checked her salinity against a reliable source (i.e. using a refractometer)? Has she checked the degree to which the pH fluctuates from lights off to lights-on? Temperature? What were all the actual parameters (maybe some numbers)? Without knowing this, I can only recommend a significant water change and possible quarantine for the fish. Even then, depending upon the nature of the problem, the rocks may simply diffuse the (possible) toxin, phosphates, etc back into the now less-saturated water.

Ok everyone we have a new agenda in helping Sandy with. She needs suggestions on the cleanup crew. And as you see from her email, many thanks to all!
I want to thank everyone for the suggestions. I have 2 skimmers working and they seem to be doing a great job by the amount I am collecting. The lights are 6 months old and my filtration is a sump. After reading the suggestions I feel that moving the tank probably caused most of the problems. The purple tang's ich is gone without treatment. Thank goodness because if I lost him I would be truly upset. He is the first saltwater fish purchased which makes him about 5 years old. Since writing I have done 2 partial water changes and that seems to have helped the most. The algae seems to be calming down as well.
Someone did suggest adding algae eaters and scavengers. Right now I have the purple tang, clown fish, strawberry wrasse and a mandarin. What other types would you suggest so I can keep control of hairy algae or any algae for that matter? I do agree that doing chemical treatments seem to do more harm than good.
Karen, I will take your suggestions and sign on board with the club this past week has been a killer between work and the holiday stuff but I will take the time to sign up this week.
Again thanks to everyone and keep your fingers cross that the tank continues to settle down.
