Pumps

Ok here is my dilema. We are wanting to upgrade our pump for our 100 gal. Currently it is running on a Mag 9 for return over a wet dry system, and no protien skimmer. We wish to take the Mag and put on our skimmer, but unsure of which pump to go with for the return. Do the inlines have any benefits over the submersible. And which do you recommend? Right now it is a fish only system, moving towards another reef. So will eventially go with a refugium. All suggestions appreciated.
Also if anyone has pumps fitting the bill, please post me.

I like the submersible, because they're quieter.

Submersibles are generally quieter, but the inlines heat the water less and seem to last longer.

At least that has been my experiance.

I prefer external, doesn't heat the water, bullet proof, and if it goes bad there's no way it will fry your fish, or leak stray voltage into your tank.

What size pump are you looking for?

The external plumb in much cleaner looking. The subs sometimes look like an accident waiting to happen.

If my sump was drilled I would go with an external. Right now I am using a mag 12.

It is sounding like an in line is the way to go. thanks for all your comments. Now next question would be, what strength for a 100 gal is standard.

That is my next question, which is the standard or appropriate gph for a 100 setup

How many drains do you have and what size are they?

I have 2 1" drains that have no problems keeping up with around 1000 gph actually returning to the tank.

I have one in and one out (1") So does that mean I need a 500. This stuff is all so confusing to me.

Are they in an overflow box? You can use them both for drain and run the return over the back of the tank. That might give you some more options as far as pump sizing and flow.

Remember external pumps produce less heat...but take up more room....

Yeah... inline pumps are ok if you 1) have room and 2) are good with plumbing... I am neither, so my mag24's are doing their duty

I am running mag 24s also for return but that is because of space...next time I will have a tank room and run external.
