What is the popular way to plumb the overflow now?

I was trying to see if there was a post somewhere on this but I have only found the Hofer Gurgler. Any suggestions or stick with the ol Durso standpipe?

What are you trying to do with it? If it is just to get water from point A to B, a durso-style standpipe is fine. If you are connecting it to a skimmer, then a speed drain is more along the lines of what you'll want, since it minimizes and/or eliminates any larger bubbles in your skimmer. You'll need a secondary bulkhead for that, though, as a backup (you won't be using it most of the time, since it is only for safety reasons).

That is a good question. I think that I want to try and see if anything has been invented yet that is even more quiet than the Durso. Is there something more reliable? I never really did have any problems with mine in the past but I wonder if there is something out that is a better design or should I just stick with the Durso.

The durso standpipe is still the easiest out of all of those and there's less involved--all with the same result. If you want to experiment with the others, that's fine, but for the amount of effort involved, it's hard to beat a durso standpipe. The only thing easier is the speed drain, except for the fact that it needs the extra bulkhead.
